An older car needs a workshop that is comfortable working without a manufacturer’s manual to hand, and the workshop is run by R. Dhandapani, who has 40 years in the trade.

What a restoration can involve

Rust cut out and repaired at the source, rather than filled and painted over.
Panel beating and straightening, and panels repaired where replacements are no longer made.
Full repaint, with the colour chosen and matched before any paint goes on.
Engine, gearbox, brakes and suspension brought back into working order.
Wiring, lights and electrics repaired or renewed, which on an older car is often overdue.

How a restoration is planned

A restoration is not one estimate. The car is inspected and recorded on a job card when it arrives, and the work is agreed in stages — body, paint, mechanical, electrical — with each stage estimated and approved by you before it starts. An old car always has surprises once panels come off, and each one comes back to you for a decision rather than appearing on the final bill. That is what keeps a restoration within what you set out to spend.
